“Artists are those who, refuting the power of apathy, connect us with our feelings.”

I have a pretty general definition of ‘art’: an act which both intends to and communicates emotion to observers. This definition isn’t quite restrictive enough–a child’s cry would fall within it–but it is at least sufficiently general.

I contrast it with ‘craft’, which refers to acts that intentionally create beauty whether or not there is an emotional message. The two often go hand in hand, but not always, and therein lies the misunderstanding of the last hundred years in art.

What is art to you?
